Romanian Medical Schools provide the international student an ideal and affordable opportunity to obtain a recognised medical, dental and pharmacy qualification: Doctor of Medicine:MD (Diploma de Licenta de doctor-medic), Doctor of Dentistry:MDS (Diploma de Licenta de doctor-medic stomatologie) and Bachelor of Pharmacy:D.pharm. (Diploma de Licenta de farmacie).

In comparison to western standards and those of more developed countries, facilities at state funded Romanian schools are modest. The education experience is of an acceptable standard and provides the prospective foreign student with an attractive opportunity to acquire a quality education in Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy offered in English language or French language.

Recently the Ministry of Education in Romania communicated with all Romanian embassies and consulates around the world to assist students by processing student visas at a faster and more efficient rate. Studying in Romania used to be a difficult process a few years ago, yet as Romania is now a member state of the European Union since January 1, 2007, and joining the SCHENGEN agreement soon, the process has become much easier for students wishing to study a graduate/postgraduate medical degree programme in Romania.

When looking for a suitable university to study medicine abroad, one has to take a number of factors into consideration. The safety of the country, the cost of living, university fees and credibility. Romanian Medical Schools score high in all of these factors and should definitely be on the top of your list.

The Romanian higher education system

The higher education system in Romania is administered by the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports functioning in keeping with current national legislation. It is organized on three cycles of undergraduate and postgraduate studies:

First degree (licenta) corresponding to bachelor's degree.


Second degree (masterat) /medical specialization corresponding to master’s degree: The Medical and Dental degrees in Romania actually corresponds to a Masters degree in any other field. Simply put, they are actually 'two degrees in one' (first and second degrees) obtained after 6 years of medical and dental schools. *For medical and dental doctors, the master/medical specialisation degree is actually a 'third degree'.


•Third degree (doctorate) corresponding to doctor’s degree Ph.D: Medical and dental doctors as well as pharmacy graduates from a Romanian medical university, must complete a master or specialisation programme in a medical, dental or pharmacy field in order to pursue a Ph.D degree in their respective fields. Ph.D degree for medical and dental doctors as well as pharmacy graduates in Romania ensures that the medical doctor, dental doctor or pharmacist can be involved in academic activities e.g. as a lecturer/assistant lecturer at any of the medical universities in Romania. *For medical and dental doctors, the Ph.D degree is actually a 'fourth degree'.
